Shakespeare first coined ‘so so’ alluding to that which is beyond satisfactory, but never excessive: a contradiction that demands contemplation. The exhibition aims at a physical replication of this process, pairing opposing or seemingly unlike works in conversation with each other, ultimately in order to challenge perspective and heighten perception. The resulting thrill parallels a sensation of the uncanny, the Freudian concept of something familiar yet strange, as when dreams mix with reality. The works are true alchemy: the dissolution and discordance of contrasting elements result in a compound construct. Within the blurred haze of abstractions by Abraham Palatnik, there is the implication of movement and stirred illusion. Beatriz Milhazes’ work hints at shades of both divine and romantic love. An awakening and revelation is suggested in the works of Antonio Obá. Meanwhile, Mirela Cabral harnesses the juxtaposition of nature and urban constructs by man. The masked and shaded figures of Nelson Leirner and Maryam Eisler hint at waking desires. The sculptures explore the theme through their incongruencies as well as their harmonies. This exhibition presents a union of artistic disciplines fused together to offer an innovative, thought provoking display of contemporary art. These artists have been selected to best illustrate the theme of immersion in fantastical paradox.
